I know all your document will be archived into the previous system directory...but not too sure about the Applications..you may need to reinstall any software you have installed...but don't worry about losing your docs or anything you have stored inside home "home" folder (docs, pictures etc.)

so all of you're files (music, movies, pictures, word documents, presentations) along with applications (like microsoft word) were restored in the "Previous System 1" folder after re-installing the OS?

sorry, i just want to make sure i dont lose my files or anything and im trying to avoid losing my laptop by sending it in to apple for anywhere between 2-6 weeks although i am in warranty.

the problem is that i also installed a security update from apple and now my computer is stuck on the apple with circular progress bar as long as i let it continue.

please respond? sorry, just a desperate college kid trying to find some answers.

You must never execute things such as 'Disk Repair' or 'Permission Repair' on a damaged hard disk.
The right way to do is to create a raw copy of the disk (using diskdump - dd), and play with the copy only, leaving the disk untouched.
You should have booted a linux live cd (like Ubuntu) instead of apple's recovery disk, and then you would have been able to access your hard drive from there.
