Introducing Bad Apple Media, LLC

I recently incorporated in Nevada under the name Bad Apple Media, LLC. The scope of this company will be to provide the same services I’ve offered in the past which are; consultation, website design, development, search engine optimization and internet marketing. In addition to any custom web site services I also intend on developing a series of premium WordPress themes with the Bad Apple brand, these themes can be found on WordPress Theme Store, soon.

Prior to forming my LLC, I had a great meeting with Rich Bernstein, CEO of Mars Venus Coaching. He has given me some great advice and great techniques for growing my business and living life in general.

I’ve been working with a few graphic artists to come up with a cartoon character that could act as a logo/brand for the company. I found a lot of talent on 99designs, which is a service that allows you to start a contest for several designers to take a whack at your project and you choose the one you like the most and they win the contest prize.

Here’s the design I chose, in 2 colors that I’m having trouble deciding on.

How Apple TV will replace my digital cable

appletv I picked up a new toy at the Apple Store the other day. I was skeptical about it at first, since it doesn’t get the best reviews, nor is it the most popular Apple product, but so far I think it’s the perfect solution for me. I don’t watch much TV but when I do it’s usually pretty late at night and nothing actually good is on. For example I use to watch The Office every week, which airs at like 8/9PM on NBC problem is I’m never watching TV around that time to catch the new episodes. I know there are solutions, such as TiVO and DVR to accommodate me, but they come with monthly service fees and hardware rentals.

One of the first things I did after unpacking the Apple TV was hacked it using the following tutorial: Hack Your Apple TV With Boxee. It was a painless process and only took me 20 minutes to do. Now that I have installed the patch I can now watch any type of DRM free multimedia (e.g., DIVX, AVI, MKV, ISO and BIN) from any computer connected to my network. I can even play multimedia through internet streams (e.g. hulu, YouTube, podcast videos) which consist of a large collection of movies as well as many popular TV series. As long as you have a good internet connection, the video streaming works flawlessly and it’s nice to be able to browser through all the episodes of your favorite TV series and watch the latest episode from the series when you’re ready to watch it.

Even without hacking the Apple TV you can still rent or buy all new DVD titles and TV series for a reasonable price, but with the Boxee Patch you aren’t required to purchase anything, really. Another feature that comes with the Apple TV is the ability to share iTunes libraries on your network. So if you have a desktop computer on your network with all your music and videos, the Apple TV will make all the media available to you, similar to the Remote iPhone application. The Apple TV also makes it easy to stay up to date with your favorite Podcasts, if you enjoy a specific podcast, you can set it in your favorites and watch the latest episode as soon as it comes out.

Now I just need to find a good Home Theatre system and I’ll be set up nicely in my home office.

Building a Bankroll

Bankroll management is extremely important when it comes to playing poker professionally. Up until recently I’ve always just played poker with whatever money I had and never really kept track of my winnings/loses let alone kept my poker money separate from the rest of my income. After I moved to Vegas and got settled in I started playing a lot more poker and decided around mid November that I would start to take the game a lot more serious.

img_0004My first step was to separate my poker money from the rest, so I withdrew $1,000 from my checking account and started playing small at $1-$2 NL tables. A friend of mine put me onto a nice iPhone app called PokerTrak. With PokerTrak I could add stats from each session, as far as my total buy in, the stakes, time played and the total at finish of each session. The software keeps a list of each session organized by date showing either how much of a win or loss that particular session was. In addition to the list view you can view your overall analysis which would compute all your sessions together and show you how you were doing long term. The image to the right is a screen shot from my iPhone taken last night, December 26th and shows all my stats from November 12th.

Once I built up my 1k to about 3k I moved up to $2-$5 NL games, which I enjoy much more. The players are better, the pots are much bigger and although my losing sessions are much more significant so are the winning ones. I think I’ll stay at these stakes for a while, I feel comfortable in every game I play in and cane afford a few losing sessions in a row since I typically buy in for $500-$1,000 each session depending on the table. I now have around 6k to play with and I’d like to build it up to around 20K by the time the world series comes around. I doubt I’ll buy in to the main event for 10K but I will certainly try some satellites and play some 1-2k buy in circuit events.

The majority of my sessions I come out a winner, but in some games I lose around 1, 2 sometimes even 3 buy-ins before walking away. The only tip I can give in regards to losing consecutively at the same game is: Are you a stronger player then the majority of the table? if not then walk away otherwise be patient you will get the opportunity to win your money back. I’ve been stuck in games where the players were absolute fish and just catching lucky cards. I stick around play my game and patients pays off eventually. If you’re playing hands poorly, making wrong decisions and you know your game is off either cause your playing on tilt, playing tired or just in a bad mood you should quit right away.

Anyways Bankroll management is important if you plan on playing poker for a living, if you only have $1,000 dollars to gamble with then you shouldn’t be playing higher limits then $1-$2NL with a $200 buy in. Always leave your self cushion to recover from a few loses in a row, because it does happen.

Web Hosting and Online Gambling Links

I doubt that I will ever understand the laws with online gambling, but I do not see how having an educational website that does not take any kind of wagers itself but may link directly to sites that do, such as FullTilt.com or PokerStars.com could be considered illegal or against any Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for a United States hosting company.

I mean I’m not mad about the situation at all, just a little surprised. I started looking around for a new host after my current hosting provider told me they couldn’t provide me with any unique C Class IP address for SEO reasons. I started asking around and got the following email from Rackspace.

Hello Michael,

This is Amie Naber from Rackspace Hosting. We had a chat last night on the website regarding a potential hosting project. I just wanted to let you know that I have received a reply from our AUP department. They said that if there is any direct links that point from your site to gambling link then we will be unable to host your site. So your site would not be able to send any customers directly to any gambling sites. If this is something that your site complies with, we can certainly host your site for you. Please do not hesitate to email or call me if you have any questions at all.

Thank You,

Amie Naber

This makes me a little nervous about my current hosting provider, what if they realize I have direct links to gambling sites and this violates their AUP as well. Can they just shut me down ? That would not be good. I better do some research and if necessary seek hosting outside of the US.

Running Good

In the past week I’ve won ~$3K playing poker, only playing 3 cash games and 1 of which was a $500 loss and 1 tournament. I think my play has been excellent, making very little mistakes and all the right decisions.

Last Saturday I played in a $130 NL Holdem Tournament at the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, before coming back to Vegas. The tournament had a good turnout of about 90 players and only went on for about 5-6 hours. The structure wasn’t the greatest, considering the blinds were doubling every round, so eventually at the final table once they reached 32K-64K with a 5K ante the 4 of us remaining decided to chop and take ~$1600 a piece. I had the chip lead with 190K while the rest of the players had ~100K so I was pretty generous to chop evenly, but with blinds that high it was pretty much flipping coins.

My second day back in Vegas, I decided to check out the action at the Hardrock, which was juicy as usual. I ended up playing like 10 hours, but with a wave of cold cards I ended up walking away not only exhausted but a loser.

palms-stacks
The next day I decided to go to Southpoint, to win some of that money back, since it’s an easy game and I typically win 9/10 times there. I was up ~$200 when my roommate, Dan texted me and told me the action at Palms was good. So I cashed out and headed over to the Palms, not before stopping at the Sports Book and putting in a wild parlay for this weekend’s playoff football (titans, panthers, eagles & steelers).

The $1-3NL game at Palms was nice, everyone had a nice stack in front of them that they were playing pretty loosely with. I was on fire from the moment I sat down, catching cards like you wouldn’t believe. I played only 3 hours and built my stack just over ~$1,300 from my initial $300 buy in.

So it’s been a good week so far, $1,500+$200+$1000=$2,700. I know it’s not big money or anything but I’m satisfied. Now if I can hit this parlay ticket I’ll be very happy guy.

Home for the Holidays

I just got back to Vegas from my hometown in NY where I spent the holidays visiting with friends and family. I had a fun but didn’t get much work done. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing because I needed a vacation to clear my mind and recharge.

It was freezing to say the least, I almost forgot what cold weather really is. The first couple days there was a winter weather advisory and driving bans on the roads so I took some pictures of that nonsense, you can see more on my Flickr stream.

Despite the weather it was nice to party with all my friends I haven’t seen in a while. Spent most of my time in local bars and restaurants. Ate lots of Pizza and Buffalo Wings and about 47 chicken finger subs since they are unheard of on the West Coast.

A couple of us decided to go to the Bills vs Patriots home game and froze our asses off, where I actually caught on fire because I was standing too close to a barrel fire. I was pretty lucky because my skin didn’t get burnt just my pants and boots, good thing I was layered up I guess.

Now it’s back to work….

Hacking iTunes

I’ve recently picked up a few iPhone/iTunes tricks that I’d like to share with those of you that would like to do the following:

Creating Custom Ring Tones with iTunes only

Using the instructions in this article I can now take any DRM free music (MP3s) from my computer and convert them into perfect quality ring tones without paying iTunes $1. Not that I’m cheap or anything but it’s nice to be able to create ring tones from any song you’d like and not be limited to the few songs iTunes offers as ring tones.

In short what your doing is clipping the song down to 30 seconds or less, converting the .MP3 into iTune’s AAC format (.m4a) then renaming the file extension .m4r so iTunes recognizes the media as a ring tone. It’s really quite simple, and only takes a couple of minutes.

Synchronizing your iPhone with multiple iTunes Libraries/Computers

sync-warning

In my opinion this should be an option to any iPhone owner. I understand why Apple designed it this way, so you can’t just plug in your iPhone to any library and steal other peoples music, but what if you have 2 computers of your own, both sharing a library on an external HD on your own network? I’m sure there are a ton of other scenarios where people would want to synchronize their iPhones with multiple PCs and not lose the data from their device.

Thanks to this article I can now sync all my Contacts and iCal with my Macbook, while I control which music I want on my iPhone using my desktop PC. Basically I changed the library ID on my PC to match the library ID of my Macbook so iTunes thinks it’s the same library each time I synchronize. Just be careful with these steps, you could very easily mess things up.

Hard Rock Poker Lounge Review

I moved to Vegas about 3 or 4 months ago, and since then I’ve been checking out many of the Poker Rooms on and off the Strip. Up until this past weekend I enjoyed Caesar’s Cash Games the best while I liked Venetian’s Room the best. In brief I came to the conclusion Caesars had the loosest games, with weak players and was the room that I’ve profited the most money in, while the Venetian’s room is very nice, most of the players were good company and solid poker players and of course the majority of the cocktail waitresses could pass as super models.

Hard Rock Poker Lounge Banner

Over this past weekend I decided to check out the new Hard Rock Poker Lounge that just opened in September. I’ve walked by it several times since me and my friends party at the Hard Rock quite a bit, but have never played in the game. The only game that was going was a 1-2 NL Hold’em game which in actuality turned out to be similar to your average 2-5 NL game and some 5-10 NL games. To say the least the action in the game was great, and the players were horrible. Granted there were a few sharks at the game that I would just avoid the majorty of the players were there to donate, reload and donate some more.

Apart from the actual poker game, I absolutely loved this room and will frequent as much as possible. The dealers are all really cool, fun and quite a few of them are even gorgeous girls that seemed very friendly. The room management was professional and took care of everyone as much as possible. They even comped my food service after only playing for 8 hours. There was one incident with a drunk old man cursing out everyone and the floor handled it very well, apologizing to everyone and trying to just take the animosity out of the room.

I’ll discuss a few hands to give you an idea of the level of play in this game..

I was dealt QJ off suit with one other player in the pot. The flop comes Q 10 4 rainbow and gets checked to me. I bet the size of the pot and am instantly called by the player. Turn comes a K and player checks again, although I like that the King gives me an open ended straight draw I figure I would make check to avoid a check raise. rivers comes an Ace and gives me the nut straight, although it was a 1 card straight meaning anyone else with a Jack in their hole cards would have the same straight. The player comes out with a bet now of $25 which was about 25% of the pot, so I raised it to $125. Without hesitation the player min-raises me to $250, leaving him self with about another ~$100. Assuming he had a Jack and this whole thing would result in a split pot I just called his raise to save time and showed my hand. Player turns over AQ to give him 2 pair, which obviously was a losing hand. The player gets up from his chair says “Nice hand!” and tosses his remaining chips into the pot, for some reason, and walks away. The dealer looks at me and just laughs and says I guess he figured he was all in, although this was never established. I ended up tipping the dealer $40 for not involving the floor or anything and just smiled at the stupidity of the unnamed player.

These next two hand I want to bring up in brief were played by the same player AKA loose cannon. First off this guy was absolutely shit faced, totally obnoxious and just a bad poker player. During one hand he did what is known as a “Hard Rock Straddle” which basically gives the player on the button the option to straddle pre-flop and have the option to raise before the flop. This is the only room in Vegas that allows this, normally straddling is only available to the player under the gone or first to act after the blinds. During his straddle an older gentlemen decided to raise the straddle to $15 with his pocket Jacks, the loose cannon re-raised the gentlemen with the JJ to $45. The player with JJ then pushed all of his $250 into the pot, fed up with the players loose cannons play and begun the shit talking. The loose cannon pondered for about 2 minutes, and proceeded to call $250 preflop with a K2 off suit. This needless to say is a sick call, but apparently was the right move since he hit 1 of his 3 kings on the river to bust the JJ of the older gentlemen who left angrier then ever. A few hands later loose cannon made another amazing called, this one for a much larger pot. A younger kid playing next to me ends up turning the nut straight with KQ, only other player involved in the hand was loose cannon, who decided to bet into the kid with the nut hand. The KQ decided to shove all his $500 into the pot which was already decently sized. The pot was now potentially $1,000 if loose cannon decided to make the call. He pondered for a couple of minutes before someone called a clock on him to hurry his decision, he made the call with 10 5, which was bottom two pair, the board was 10 5 J A with 1 more card to come. After the money is made right in the pot, the turn is dealt and BAM! 10 on river to give loose cannon a full house and send the kid with the nuts home with his head spinning.

The room is very new, and they are starting to run promotions and get as many players in there as possible. If you live in Vegas and are looking for a new room to check out, I would highly recommend this room. Here are a couple pictures of the room, which is a very comfortable environment, dark lighting nice TVs on the wall, very comfortable seating, a bar and a bathroom all in one.

Settling in

It’s been about a week since I moved into my apartment in Vegas and things are just starting to get situated. I’ve been working a lot, keeping busy at the same time trying to meet some new people and have some fun. My roommate Dan is cool, not only is he my roommate but he is also a client of mine. He just started up a business called Best Odds Corp, which is a company geared towards the online gaming industry, He’s paying me a salary to maintain a bunch of sites he already has going. Dan’s a big time poker affiliate and has some great plans/ideas for his business. He wants me to be his main developer/designer of a list of his current and future websites, which are mainly poker/online casino oriented. Dan also recently purchased Omnitheme so we plan on staying in Premium Wordpress Themes market and releasing future versions.

We just got a nice office in a business park about 8 minutes from the condo, where I will be working out of once we get some furniture in there, it’s a temporary spot until we start to hire more staff and need a larger office. I wanted to buy a car as soon as I got out here, but I’m still having problems with my license, since NYS is putting a hold on it, so in the mean time Dan has been letting me use of his cars to get around. The condo I’m living at in the Panorama Towers is amazing, here are some pictures:
